Chiara Bätting : The F1A Wild Card prodigy.

The junior F1 Academy series made its debut at the legendary Silverstone Circuit over the weekend of July 4-5. However, the biggest surprise of the event was undoubtedly 16-year-old Swiss racing driver Chiara Bätting.

Chiara Bätting, a 16-year-old racing driver from Switzerland, began her karting career at the age of 8 and has made significant progress since then. She has claimed the Swiss karting championship title in the OK Junior category three times. Following this, she was chosen for the F1 Academy Discover Your Drive International Program, where she ended up as the runner-up in the OK-N Senior Category in 2025. In 2025, she also signed with the Red Bull Junior Team and, thanks to them, was able to race in the Saudi Arabia Formula 4 Championship, where she achieved multiple top-10 finishes. This year, she took on another challenge, the Formula Winter Series, where she successfully secured a podium finish. And at the start of this season, started competing in the British F4.

“A Dream Come True,” that's how Chiara described her F1 Academy debut as a Wild Card at the beginning of the weekend.  “Silverstone is one of the most legendary circuits in motorsport, so making my F1 Academy debut there as a Wild Card is a dream come true.”

Bätting showcased her impressive pace from the very first, and only, practice session of the weekend, where she topped the timesheets. The drivers returned to the track later that afternoon for qualifying under different conditions. Although some competitors had the advantage of previous collective testing at Silverstone or experience from racing there earlier this season in the British F4 Championship, qualifying remained a major challenge for many of the drivers.

Bätting was among those already familiar with the circuit. Chiara currently sits in a comfortable 13th place in the overall standings of the British F4 Championship, making her the highest-ranked female driver in the championship. Back in May, she secured an impressive podium finish, taking third place in a race at Silverstone. Another step forward.

Thanks to those impressive performances, all eyes were on the young Swiss driver throughout the weekend, where everyone was eager to see whether she could convert her outstanding pace into pole position.

After a tense 30-minute qualifying session, she did exactly that. At just 16 years old, Chiara Bätting became not only the youngest ever pole sitter in F1 Academy history, but also the first and only Wild Card driver to claim pole and a top 3 qualifying position in the championship. Chiara admitted that the pole position came as a surprise even to herself.  “To be honest, I made a mistake at Copse, where I ran off and had fully dirty tyres, so I just had one push. I didn’t maximise what I had. I went purple, purple on my in-lap and four tenths up my fastest lap. So I think if I would have put the lap on the board, we would have been there. I just maximised everything in the end when we swapped tyres. I can be quite happy that it happened to me as I have slightly better tyres, but the tyre drop is quite huge, so I don't think I could have improved anymore.”

Her performances during both races only reinforced her exceptional form. In the reverse-grid race, where she started from eighth on the grid, she managed to hold on to her position, narrowly missing out on a podium finish, but still being able to score a single point. However, in Sunday's feature race, starting from pole position, Bätting fought her way to a remarkable second-place finish. She was overtaken in the opening lap by the home favourite and championship leader Alisha Palmowski, but comfortably secured the runner-up spot.

That result added yet another milestone to Bätting's record, as she became the first Wild Card driver in F1 Academy history to finish on the podium. The leading duo also demonstrated their dominant pace, finishing more than eight seconds clear of the rest of the field.

The podium capped off an extraordinary debut weekend for Chiara Bätting, and many might consider this a moment which puts her on the map. Three new records, a pole position, and a podium finish highlighted the incredible form of the young Swiss driver, and the world of racing can't wait to see what the future holds for her.
