Back-to-back Championships: can it be a reality for Lando Norris? or is it just a dream?
Following the last race in Zandvoort, only a single non-Mercedes driver has won more than one race this season, Britain’s Lando Norris with 2 wins for McLaren. However, this puts him way behind this year’s runaway Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, whose 6 race wins has built a huge 83 point deficit for Lando. But with 11 races remaining it is still all to play for.
How likely is a Second World Championship for Lando?
The reigning World Champion, Lando Norris, has not had a picture-perfect start to the season, with a DNS (Did not start) in the second race and 2 further DNFs in Canada and Monaco. McLaren has not been consistent enough for Lando to fight against the top teams of Mercedes and Ferrari.
However, there has been a clear shift in the last few races for Norris. His renewed competitiveness has enabled him to consistently be in the top 3 over the past few races and winning the last two races in Hungary and Netherlands. Those few wins have allowed him to surpass Charles Leclerc by 4 points into fourth place in the Championship.
While the idea of Lando catching up 83 points to Antonelli may seem initially far-fetched for the inconsistent McLaren, it is clear that Lando has successfully managed to adapt his driving style to fit the new car. And you only need to look to last year to see this same feat was almost achieved. In 2025, at Zandvoort, Max Verstappen had an even bigger 104-point deficit to the then Championship leader, Oscar Piastri. And there were only 9 races left, two less than this year. By the last race, Max managed to reduce that gap, achieving second in the Championship and narrowly missing out on his 5th Championship by 2 points in the closely fought final race. This all shows the possibility of back-to-back titles for Lando.
What are the main hurdles?
There are a few specific hurdles in the way for Lando, one being the MCL40. Over the course of the first half of the season, McLaren has had 3 DNS’s and 3 DNF’s; the car has just not been competitive enough, and while Lando has seemed to have reached a turning point in his season, Oscar Piastri’s season says otherwise. Oscar is 7th in the Championship with 104 points, which is less than half of the Championship leader's. Not only that, Oscar's last DNF was in Hungary, which was due to a gearbox failure, further highlighting the reliability issues with the MCL40 and how it could pose a large threat for Lando and the rest of his season.
Another hurdle, also related to McLaren’s reliability, is batteries. It was very apparent since the start of the season that McLaren, and more specifically Lando’s McLaren, has had continuous issues with its battery. As a result of these issues, it has caused him to go through 3 batteries (which is the season limit before being penalised) by only the third race; that’s one battery per race, which is absurd! Furthermore, he is on his 4th, which resulted in him having to serve a 10-place grid penalty in Belgium, costing him another potential race win. Due to external factors of McLaren’s horrifyingly slow pit stop of 7.8 seconds (which is another hurdle Norris faces in the future) Lando finished 7th, which won’t help him if he wants to fight for back-to back Championships.
So, with all things considered, could this Championship be reality or is it just a dream?
Overall, with the Championship still in reach, Norris cannot afford another mistake or unreliable weekend, so all eyes need to be on the Scuderia duo and the Silver Arrows, where George Russell is looking for redemption from his string of bad luck that has put him in a 59-point deficit to his championship-leading teammate.
The question remains: can back-to-back titles become a reality?
