Silver Arrows Surge: Antonelli Top Scorching Austrian FP1 Amid Pit Lane Drama
Amid a sweltering heatwave, Round 8 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship 2026 brought us to the Styrian Mountains in Austria, as well as a Heat Hazard Declaration. With track temperatures already exceeding 50 Degrees Celsius, it became evident that tyre management would be the key to taking home the trophy on Sunday. We saw 6 rookies take FP1 once again. Ayumu Iwasa for Racing Bulls, Dino Beganovic for Ferrari, Paul Aron for Audi, Luke Browning for Williams, Jak Crawford for Aston Martin and Ryo Hirakawa for Haas.
Silver Arrows Setting the Standard
It was made abundantly clear from the get-go that Mercedes were once again the ones to beat. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli laid out the benchmark straight away with a 1:07.796 whilst using the Pirelli C5 Soft compound. His British Teammate wasn’t far behind, desperate to steal the lead of the championship by setting a lap just 0.040 seconds behind the Italian. It was an inter-team battle for the entire hour session as they spent the first practice session of the weekend trading the fastest lap between them. Russell initially held the top spot, using his medium tyres to set a 1:10.407, but he was complaining through his radio that his “throttle pedal feels weird compared to last week”. The Italian Stallion made no hesitation to use his teammate’s issues to his advantage by holding the top spot all the way through his soft tyre qualifying runs, despite a minor lock-up into Turn 1, which sent him into the run-off area.
Reliability Woes
With Austria being the home race of Red Bull, the Oranje Army was out in full force to support their favourite Dutchman. The Austrian team brought one of the most extensive upgrade packages among the 11 teams, hoping to break their losing streak this year. Favourite Max Verstappen faced problems straight out of the pit lane as he repeatedly came to a halt in the fast lane due to issues with his car’s Anti-Stall systems, forcing the mechanics to wheel him back up the pit lane and back into the Red Bull garage. He ended up missing the first 20 minutes of the session while the team found a fix to get him out of his home turf. Once he finally got out, his troubles weren’t over just yet, as he was complaining of having zero feeling as his soft tyres rapidly destroyed themselves in the 50-degree track temperatures.
Red Bull wasn’t the only one facing issues. Verstappen’s teammate, Hadjar, was confined to his garage for the first 35 minutes of the session with a hydraulic issue, leaving him furious over the radio about how much of a mess the car balance was. Reigning World Champion Lando Norris also had to stay in his McLaren next for the first 45 minutes due to a major hydraulic leak, allowing him only 9 running laps once he finally got out.
The Rookies Step Up
FP1 featured 6 fresh-faced rookies stepping into various cockpits to assist in gathering crucial data for the weekend. Ferrari Driver Academy driver Dino Beganovic was the standout rookie of the session, replacing Charles Leclerc to go on to finish an amazing P9. And in his first season in F1, VCARB driver Arvid Lindblad put his car into P6, claiming the highest session finish in his career.
As is expected in this sport, the session didn’t go without a red flag. The chaotic hour was cut short with only a few minutes remaining when veteran Sergio Perez, driving for Cadillac, stopped just before Turn 3 after suffering a sudden mechanical failure and coming to a halt on the track.
As this is only the start of the weekend, a lot of on track drama is expected to occur. But the main question is, will Antonelli continue his streak or will somebody knock him off the top spot just like Lewis Hamilton did last weekend?
